Local and Central Government Wānanga - 8 December 2022

Following on from our succesful Industry W`ananga and community engagement events, this wānanga was undertaken to help understand and align aspirations with local and central Government partners.

Presentations were provided by the Mataura River Project group, Te Papa Atawhi | Department of Conservation, Toitū Te Whenua | Land Information New Zealand, Southland District Council and Environment Southland.

This wānanga brought light to the aspirations, challenges and opportunities for work programme alignment of the attendees. Through the collaborative conversations, a new level of understanding of how we could work together to prioritise and progress projects was shared.

Collectively, there was a definite willingness to continue to work cohesively to support one another to enhance economic pathways and cultural opportunities for future generations and protection of our taonga assets.

An overview of the key themes relating to the aspirations and challenges that the meeting attendees considered about the Mataura River can be found here (DOCX, 393.03 kB).

Thriving Southland Catchment Hui

As part of our community engagement, a group of around 25 farmers from across catchments that associate with the Mataura River met at Hokonui Rūnanga on the 22nd of November. The purpose of the hui was for the Mataura River Project group to gain greater insights into the perspectives and lessons from this group. The attendees noted intergenerational lessons, stories about how the farms and environment have changed over time, as well as an optimism for collaborative working together.

It was a fanastic opportunity, with clear aspirations and challenges noted from all. Themes from the workshop session can be found here. (DOCX, 394.32 kB)

Reimagining Mataura River Project Wānanga with Industry Partners - 1st September 2022

Working together with key stakeholders, this wānanga was undertaken to help understand and align aspirations with industry partners. This wānanga brought light to the various projects and work underway across Industry to provide a new level of understanding of specific projects, and to provide a forum to support one another to enhance economic pathways and cultural opportunities for future generations and protection of our taonga assets.

Presentations were provided by the Mataura River Project group, Fonterra, Thriving Southland and Fulton Hogan. The presentations, the conversations and the collective willingness to work together where practicable, looking towards a reimagined Mataura, was clearly evident throughout the day.

An overview of the key themes relating to the aspirations and challenges that the meeting attendees considered about the Mataura River can be found here (PDF, 2.27 MB).

Community Groups & Local/Central Government Wānanga

We are currently planning for additional wānanga for other key stakeholder groups to ensure we are able to independently capture thoughts, views, aspirations and areas of alignment with these key participants in the success of the Mataura River being reimagined.
